Colombia’s rider of team Mitchelton-Scott Johan Esteban Chaves, taking his second Giro stage win, finished just ahead of British teammate Simon Yates, whose late surge to join Chaves in the final kilometre earned him the overall leader’s pink jersey. FDJ’s Thibaut Pinot finished third, some 30 seconds behind the leading pair, after a 164km ride between Caltanissetta and Etna, with Froome finishing seconds behind the Frenchman.
